93rd Academy Awards

Today is the date for the 93rd Academy Awards and I wanted to write a bit about how it was to work on one of the campaign artworks for this years OSCARS.

It doesn’t happen that often but sometimes you get a client project where it feels like everything aligns. Where the client is someone you feel inspired to work with, where the brief itself makes you feel excited and leaves enough creative space for you to bring your own take on it, AND where the actual working process ends up being smooth, easy and where you feel like the client gives you a lot of creative freedom. This was definitely on of those projects.

The brief was, simply, “What do movies mean to you?”

We also had a color palette to stick to (though it was pretty broad) and we had to include the statue in the image. Other than that we were pretty much allowed to do, or at least try out, whatever we wanted.

When I started thinking about what movies mean to me I realized that the most important aspect, and the one that I wanted to work with, is that it can transport you to another world. Through the images, acting, script, photography, sound etc you can forget about your own life for a while and you can feel and experience new things through this medium.

Early sketch.

I wanted to encapsulate the statue in these shapes to represent the notes that helps transport you and that puts you in this other state of mind. Surrounded by sounds and visuals that can both bring back emotions and experiences from your own life but that can also give perspective and make you understand someone else’s life story in a new way.
